A new wearable device for regrowing hair

Hair loss affects millions of people, globally- it affects approximately 35 million men and about 21 million women. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications, etc. Anyone can experience hair loss.
A few investigations have demonstrated that stimulating the skin with lasers can help regrow hair, however, the equipment is frequently large, consumes a lot of energy and is hard to use in day by day life.

Now, scientists at the American Chemical Society come up with a new solution that speeds up hair growth. Tested on mice, their method successfully increased hair growth.

Scientists have developed a flexible, wearable photostimulator, an ultrathin array of flexible vertical micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs). The array consisted of 900 red μLEDs on a chip slightly smaller than a postage stamp and only 20 μm thick. The device used almost 1,000 times less power per unit area than a conventional phototherapeutic laser, and it did not heat up enough to cause thermal damage to human skin.
Scientists tested the device’s capacity to regrow hair on mice with shaved backs. Contrasted and untreated mice or those getting minoxidil injections, the mice treated with the μLED fix for 15 minutes every day for 20 days demonstrated altogether faster hair growth, a more extensive regrowth zone, and long hairs.
The study is published in the journal ACS Nano.
